USS Hawkins

Overview

USS Wisconsin is a ship built on an idea. That idea was a warship that could stand against anything the quadrants could muster, without quantum torpedoes. This was in anticipation of potential arms reduction treaties (which never came about).

It is a variant of the Gagarin-class with a set of dedicated fusion reactors just for the main phaser array. Practically the entire ship could be destroyed and she would still keep shooting. However, this design had an unexpected side effect: the main phaser array can only fire at full power. All attempts to rectify the issue have failed, and ripping out the fusion reactors is more trouble than it's worth for a Starfleet trying to rebuild after the Dominion War.

The ship was renamed USS Wisconsin, after an engineer discovered an anecdote about a 20th Century Earth vessel with that name.

During a coastal bombardment, an enemy mobile mortar team struck the ship with a small explosive, causing no damage and minor injuries. USS Wisconsin replied with a full salvo from nearly the largest guns ever mounted on a ship of war, levelling an entire hillside. This prompted one of her escorts to signal “Temper, temper”.

Whether the story is true or not, it has been embraced by its first crew, led by Captain Me Hani Ita Mala Lo, someone who embraces the doctrine of overwhelming firepower. “Temper, Temper” is painted on the rear bulkhead of the bridge.

USS Wisconsin quickly put the phasers to good use. In her first mission she successfully fended off a rogue Cardassian warship with the longest confirmed phaser hit in federation history, thanks to a clever use of gravitational lensing by her crew. The threatened merchant vessel had not even picked up USS Wisconsin on her sensors yet, prompting her to hail on all frequencies “Who the hell are you guys? And thanks.”
